Easy Steps to Start Dowsing
Have you always been interested in the magical ability of dowsers? Wishing you could do the same thing yourself? Well the bad news is---there is no magic; the good news is---we all can dowse. Now how well you dowse, that degree of skill and ability is entirely up to you.
Just like any other skill in life, we become competent with practice, we become good with more practice plus understanding, and finally we become the master with more practice, understanding, and willingness to allow our intuitive abilities to shine through the veil we hide behind.
The purpose of this article is to outline the basics so you can begin your adventure into the world of dowsing as soon as you have finished reading. There are any number of tools that can be used to dowse, such as L-rods, Y-rods, bobbers, and pendulums. For the master dowser, tools begin to be unnecessary and a large number of tool-less dowsing techniques are employed. I will be discussing learning to dowse using the pendulum, simply because this is my tool of choice.
The First Thing You Need is a Pendulum
You can purchase one from a store or online, but if a simple tool is all you need to get started, begin by looking around your house. Any string or chain can be used which has something suspended from the end of it. I have made hundreds of pendulums in the past ten years using gemstones, crystals, stones and beads but my favorite pendulum is the necklace I wear. It is a simple quartz crystal pendant on a silver chain. It is my signature jewelry piece, not wearing it feels like walking around without underwear. So it is always with me. The trouble with my other pendulums was that I wouldn't always have it with me then I would want to dowse something and ughhh! no pendulum. The necklace eliminates the problem. You can use a needle on a thread, a key on a keychain, a screw looped through a string. The possibilities are limited my your imagination.
Now We are Ready to Get Started:
Step 1: Get Clear
Empty your mind of any busyness that is cluttering it up...pretend there is a port hole on the side of your head... open it up, allow the thoughts, chatter, mind-mess to drain out. If you have some trouble with this, concentrate on your breathing...breathe in open space, breathe out stuffiness, continue until you feel very clear headed.
Step 2: Get Connected & Grounded
Get connected to your higher self, this is a continuation of step one, once the gunk is moved out, our higher energies have space. Use whatever means gets you into this space. I like to center myself and ask to be in perfect alignment with my higher self, by focusing my attention on the crown chakra at the top of the head, while imagining a strong golden cord between me and the Source. I then ground myself. This is done simply by visualizing strong roots growing out of the bottom of my feet, moving deeply into Mother Earth. Here I am provided with a two way flow...if I need to discharge energy it can flow into the earth to be transmuted, if I need to gather earth energy, it is absorbed upward.
Step 3: Find Your Yes & No
In order to dowse, you must know what your Yes response will look like as well as your No response. Holding your pendulum chain or string comfortably in one hand, position your elbow on a table or solid foundation. Give the direction: "Please Show Me My Yes Response". Then let go of any expectation and wait. It may take a minute to have your pendulum show a reaction, although most people can get a response much quicker, within 10 -15 seconds on their first attempt. The swing may be a vertical or horizontal line, a clockwise or counterclockwise swing, or a diagonal to the left or right. Record what your Yes Response was.
Next give the direction: "Please Show Me My No Response." Generally it will be the opposite of your Yes response. If your received a horizontal line for a Yes, then in most cases you will receive a vertical line for a No. This is not always the case but it is more frequently than not. Record what your No response was.
On the first few attempts the response may be a weak signal. If this is the case, you can strengthen the response just by asking. For example, when you direct "Show Me My Yes" and you get a weak (slow moving/barely moving) horizontal line, follow with the direction "Show Me a Stronger Yes". The pendulum will move faster or quicker, in a more definite or defined way. A few times practicing this will generally result in strong swings from then on.
Step 4: Questions to Ask Before Dowsing
Dowsers practice asking 3 questions before beginning. May I? Can I? Should I? The questions refer to: May I dowse for this information? Can I- do I have the ability/experience to dowse for this information? Should I dowse for this information or is it best to leave it alone?
Step 5: Some More about Your Questions
- The subconscious mind is very literal and does not make assumptions.
- Be specific and clear.
- Yes or No questions only! Seems basic but sometimes we forget.
- Ask only one question at a time. This means: NO COMPOUND QUESTIONS.
- Empty your mind, be curious to know the answer, don't use this system to validate something you want to prove
- Along the same lines, do not ask questions you have a vested interest in or are highly emotional and you can not detach from-have someone else dowse for you.
- After you ask the question, let go and let the response come through you.
Step 6: Begin to Dowse
Start dowsing very simple things until you get comfortable. Here are a few examples of what you can do:
- You can get a partner to work with and have 2 apples in the room, one organic and one conventional. Hang your pendulum over the first apple, asking "Is this apple organic?" Your partner will know the answer and confirm your response for you.
- Get a deck of cards, pull out equal numbers of red cards and black cards. Hang the pendulum over the card, ask "Is this card red?" Check your response. Shuffle the cards and continue practicing.
- Have your partner sit in a chair, asking them to think of either a happy thought or a fearful thought, but not tell you what they are thinking. Hold the pendulum over their head and ask, "Is _____ thinking a happy thought?"
Other Important Things to Remember
- As with any new skill: Practice! Practice! Practice! is necessary to achieve accuracy.
- When you get tired-stop, period! It affects the accuracy of results.
- Perform ethically.
- If asking about the future, remember there is not one possible answer but several potentialities, all based on the current set of circumstances.
So now that you have some of the basics, go ahead, off with you! Have fun dowsing.

The Ancient Method Of Dowsing
Dowsing has been used for many centuries as a way to find things that cannot be easily seen with a person's naked eye. It has been frequently used in the search for items such as underground water, so people will know where to place a well. It is used to find pipes that are buried underground so that people can determine where to dig. It can be used to find items like coal, and oil, and minerals that are buried beneath the surface. Dowsing readings have been used when things get lost like people and animals. It is used by many psychics to help law enforcement to locate things like murder victims.
This method of search and discovery seems to date all the way back to the Ancient Egyptians. The art of the Ancient Egyptians depicts men with forked sticks performing what appears to be dowsing readings. In later years in Europe this method was used to find things but people thought that it was the work of witches and wizards. They called the sticks that were used to perform the dowsing readings witches sticks and wizards rods.
The people that thought this work was of witches were not entirely wrong, because psychic power does seem to play a part in the dowsing readings and how strong the readings are. While most anyone can use a dowsing rod cut from ash, willow, or hazel and find a good spot to dig a well, it takes someone with a little more psychic prowess to find a dead body, or discover an illness in a living body using a pendulum or stick.
When doing a dowsing reading to locate an object the person carrying the dowsing rod will walk slowly over an area and hold the stick out in front of them. When the person gets close enough to the item they are searching for the stick will twitch or point to the exact place that the item is located. In the case of underground water the rod will generally point straight down at the spot where the person should dig. The people using these tools need to make sure they hold them very lightly so as not to influence the decision of the tool.
Psychics can use swinging pendulums over the human body just like the sticks over ground. The psychic will concentrate on the person lying before them and they will ask simple questions like where an illness is originating from inside the person's body. The pendulum will swing and will stop at the place of concern or it may swing a different direction to indicate the position of the problem. These pendulums have also been used to diagnose the sex of an unborn child.

Energy Healing And Body Talk
These days there are so many healing techniques available to us, like
- Quantum Touch
- Touch for Health
- Zero Balancing
- Healing Touch
- Chakra Balancing
- Ki Gong
The list goes on and on. It's exciting to know that more and more people around the world are accepting the healing value of alternative and complementary modalities.
When we take a class in any one of these invaluable techniques, the focus of course is on learning the technique...
- How to protect ourselves from picking up clients' "stuff"
- How to channel or run energy through our bodies out to our hands
- How to approach and treat certain kinds of issues
- The body mechanics we use, etc.
What I see missing from the classes is how to assess the body healing type of the individual we are working with. What do I mean by that?
Over the years, doing energy healing from the 1980s to the present time, I started to realize that with each person, I was addressing the energy flow to their bodies in a different way. Yes, there is the technique to follow, but after a while the practice becomes almost second nature. I found that as I was "listening" to the bodies, I was "talking" to them differently. And I haven't found that kind of body talk mentioned anywhere in the energy healing field.
Of course, I think that each energy healing therapist has a particular way that their inner dialog with the client feels most comfortable or most natural. But what I found was that, when I shifted my own inner preference for how I channeled or ran energy to match my client's healing type, their recovery occurred in shorter lengths of treatment time.
So here's what was shown to me in the course of my years in energy healing: There are three basic types of healing preference that each body has: physical, mental, and spiritual. That seems to line up nicely with the complementary approach to body-mind-spirit healing, which is about the triune nature of being human. But what I'm referring to is the dominant energy healing preference each body is wired for. Each person's body responds most effectively to the type of energy transfer that matches his or her own energy healing type.
So sometimes I found I would be silently talking to the body and explaining what it was going through and encouraging it to heal itself. "Yes, you had a bad fall. You know your knee is injured, and you know how to fix it. You know how to do this." This silent body talk flowed into their bodies along with the energy. This was obviously for a mental body healing type.
Other times I found myself praying. Sometimes it was a standard prayer, sometimes it was a free-flowing appeal to the person's guides or angels or Christ Spirit or Mary or an archangel or the Universal Healing Forces. Whatever came to mind to say, this prayer-type energy flowed into the spiritual body healing type.
And of course, there's the physical body type. This was a bit of a challenge for me, since most of the energy healing I do is in the bio-field around the body and there's little or no physical contact. But the physical body healing type needs to feel it for it to respond more readily with its own inner healing mechanisms.
So I'd touch the area in need, sometimes deeply, while my inner body talk with that person was more along the lines of a cheerleader, "Here it is. Go. Fix this. You can do it." Or sometimes there wasn't that much dialog, just a lot of purposeful contact while I ran energy.
By the 1990s, I figured it would be easier for me to know ahead of time which client was which body healing type before the session started so that I could start the body talk right away. Since I'd been learning how to do dowsing, I asked my pendulum what the type was. You can probably also use finger-muscle testing, if you're familiar with that. It's a simple yes-no process of elimination as you ask which healing type your client is.
There were some surprises that I learned along the way, too. People who I thought for sure would be one type turned out to be another, even though their personalities clearly indicated something else. Like my Dad. Here was a guy who was totally immersed in 3-D. If he couldn't see it, it didn't exist. A very physical guy. When he got older and started having health problems (and let me work on them, which wasn't all the time), I dowsed and - lo and behold - his healing body type was a spiritual!!!
Then there's my Mom, who I thought for sure would be a spiritual type, but the dowsing told me she was a physical! She believed in the old-country ways of laying on of hands, had a strong church connection, which Dad didn't have, and was even known to have healing hands when she was younger (which was great for us as kids). But her body responded more effectively to the physical body touch-approach.
It reminded me of something I came across in the Edgar Cayce holistic health readings. He talked about the "body mind" as though it was something different or separate from the conscious mind. And now I understood that. The body does have a mind of its own. And when we address that clearly, it responds more readily to whatever healing energy we deliver.
Another surprise was that some people turn out to have dual types. This is more rare, but when you find it, it gives you more variety in how you frame your inner dialog with the body.
Finally, one night in the late 1990s as I was meditating, it was revealed to me that what my guidance had shown me described the way our Master Teacher, Jesus the Christ, healed people. For many of us, Christ's healings in the New Testament were our first exposure to energy healing, even though we probably thought of it as magical or superhuman, not something we could all do (even though He said we could). Maybe even some of the priests and pastors of our formal churches did the "laying on of hands." But think about this:
When Jesus healed the blind man, he put mud on the man's eyes and rubbed it in. Then the man could see. This was an example of the physical body healing type. The man needed to feel something happening to his eyes.
When He told the cripple that his sins were forgiven, or to rise up and walk, He was addressing a mental body healing type. The man simply got up and walked away. There was no contact at all with him.
Finally, when a woman touched the hem of His garment and He asked her why she did that, she replied that that's what she knew she needed to do to be healed. Definitely spiritual or faith healing.
There also is one other example of a type of healing Jesus did and that was when the Roman soldier asked Him to heal his good servant who was not present at the time. This was a beautiful and dramatic example of both distance healing for the servant and faith healing on the part of the soldier.
During the course of working with many clients over the years, my own guidance has revealed techniques and understandings that were invaluable in helping my people regain function and health sooner and more easily. You can use this information for yourself as well during those times you need to amplify more healing resource into your own body. I hope you find this information applicable in your own interactions with people in need.

The Dowsing Practice and the Energy
Dowsing is built upon "beyond the physical" principles. It may come to you as a shock, but there are well grounded researches that confirm dowsing may be more than just a game. Dowsing acknowledges the presence of "stress" created upon earth.
Imagine that certain energies can be created-some positive and others negative. Negative events therefore create negative energy. So how can dowsing help?
Dowsing can help you by identifying places where there is positive or negative energy. It can be even used to help you "heal" a place so to speak. For instance, you are having trouble sleeping, or you are constantly having nightmares. Perhaps the reason is you are sleeping on so-called "stress lines". These kinds of energy lines can even cause sleeplessness or sickness for you.
You might notice that sometimes you are simply drawn to a certain area in your house, or in the school or elsewhere. And then, you may have the feeling that you are in a place with good aura and positive energy. Well, this is a common phenomenon. If you are attracted to these positive places, then you may well find more. This is how dowsing can help you. With dowsing, you can "see" what disturbances are in your immediate environment, and even what have caused them. You can predict certain disturbances otherwise unseen. You can also heal places in order to have more positive energy. You can determine you own level of personal energy, and create a vibrant environment with that energy.
In the Internet there are many dowsing materials available. However, it is best to try something that a friend or a person you trust has already tried and assuming that it worked. Dowsing is not as hard as it may seem. As you learn the basic practices and the first principles, you can begin to strengthen your own energy.
Furthermore, people can also leave their energy behind. And these may be quite problematic. Sometimes, in a certain place, you just feel out of touch with yourself. Yes, it does not only happen in the movies. Haunted houses are not all cliche(C) or mere inventions. If this is the case, dowsing can help you remove this residual energy left behind by previous owners. In addition to these benefits, you can also determine the aura of people-you can find out if they are positively or negatively "charged" so to speak. Dowsing can also be fun and helpful, so try it as it suit your needs.
